Week 1-Sustainability

Here is a sample I have made using different plastics and other scrap fabrics, inspired by my research into sustainability. 13 million tones of plastic end up in the ocean a year, not only polluting the ocean with harmful chemicals, but also killing fish and other types of sea life.

I used for my sample a scrap piece of calico fabric and some left over blue organza, i wanted my sample to loosely replicate the sea. I then made some yoyos out of an old plastic bag and cut up an old plastic straw and stitched that all on to my sample. i also rushed an old mask and stitched that on to my sample to replicate the waves of the ocean, lastly i stitched on top of my sample using old blue thread i found. my gole for this sample was to only use material that would have gone in the bin or been wasted.

Week 2- Emerging technologies

I took this photograph of this butterfly, and then used photoshop to manipulate the colours. By using photoshop I was able to see my image in different ways. This is an emerging technologies as this method of changing photos could be used in fashion to make different combinations of prints for fabrics, i displayed this in 2 digital fashion illustrations i created on procreate.

Week 3-Nature

This weeks blog was on nature, i thought it would be best to sketch an image of nature that is around be because sketching is one of the most authentic ways to capture nature how we see it in the moment. for this image i first sketched out the flowers i saw and then used watercolours to fill in the colour, and a black fine line pen to finish it off.

Week 4- Cultural sustainability

For this week i chose to look at a traditional Japanese garment called the kimono, it is the national dress of japan . It is usually worn for occasions including wedding ceremonies, funerals, and university graduation ceremonies.

I have also chosen to look into John Galliano interpretation of a kimono in his Christian Dior spring summer 2007 show.

Week 5- Empathy

This weeks blog was about empathy, i have chosen to look at colour psychology, and how colours can make you feel, after doing some research i found that 35% of people associate the colour blue with the emotion sadness, the colour red 68% with love, the colour orange with comfort and warmth, the colour black 51% with sadness, the colour yellow 52% with joy.

I created 2 oil pastel pictures of one of my friend displaying both happy and sad emotions and then used the colours representing those positive and negative emotions.

Self reflection

In the ‘intro to’ project, we got to listen to a series of lectures every week. I was really inspired by these lectures, and they helped me to push the boundaries of my work and explore new techniques. We then reflected on these talks and did our own research into the topics, this is something that I really enjoyed as I got to explore a wide range of subjects and expand my knowledge.

I also found the seminars after the lectures really helpful as we were given ideas on which areas within the main topics we could look into. This is something that was definitely useful for me in order to know where to start with my research. I also found the academic support sessions really useful for learning how to structure and write academic essays.

The ‘intro to’ unit has been successful overall for me, however, I did struggle with adapting to the new ways of working at university. I found it difficult to navigate Moodle and the blog at first, but through using these websites, I have begun to understand them.

I found it a challenge to keep up with the pace of work at university, especially the written tasks within the blog and the academic essay. Writing is something I have always struggled with, and I found it very difficult to write my essay, but through perseverance I completed the essay and it helped me in developing my research and writing skills.
