Week 1
Sustainability
When trying to find inspiration for this project, i came across an image of Daisy May Cooper on the Bazar website, wearing a dress made out of bin bags. i was immediately drawn into this idea and wanted to create something like it as, i thought it was a perfect representation of the consequence of fast fashion. what i mean by this is, the attempt to make clothes out of trash bags is a moving critique of the fast fashion business. fast fashion relies on overproduction of apparel and low-cost labour to prosper, which increases resource consumption, pollution, and social inequality. The fashion industry’s exploitive practises hurt workers in poor nations and account for a size-able amount of the worlds carbon emissions.

I also did this drawing of a water bottle. Most plastic water bottles are designed for single use purposes, meaning that they’re used once and then thrown away. this disposability contributes to a significant amount of waste all around the world which also ends up in our oceans harming our wildlife. By drawing this water bottle i also wanted to highlight on the amount of fossil fuels that get get extracted into our environment because of the production of water bottles.

Week 2
Emerging technologies
I created this drawing using oil pastels and then used photoshop to manipulate my piece by copying my image into the app and changing the background. This shows a type of emerging technology that would also be used a lot in the fashion industry when creating things like fabrics. Using emerging technologies in fashion is very popular as it helps to add something more to the art of your work.
As you can see, the images of my work where I used photoshop to manipulate my drawing are a lot more interesting and vibrant than the original piece. Using emerging technologies is coming more and more popular in the fashion industry today as it allows you do to things that you wouldn’t be able to do by hand.

week 3
Nature
I drew these flowers using mixed media- oil pastels and pencil conveying the beauty of nature.
In todays world our environment is being massively damaged by the fashion industry through the use of carbon emissions that are used to create garments that we all wear in our day to day lives. These carbon emissions and chemicals are toxic to the workers that are surrounded by them everyday, our environment and our wild life. Toxic waste gets released into our oceans everyday and not only this but many trees and plants from our wild life’s habitat gets cut down to create many garments that we wear today.
I wanted to express this idea through my drawing of these flowers as I wanted to present the beauty of nature that we are slowly destroying from the factories we have created to make fast fashion garments.

week 4
Cultural sustainability
I created this piece using oil pastels which was inspired by traditional Japanese patterns, as you can see in the image beside it. Through my piece, I was focusing on the colours and shapes of the Japanese garment, emphasising on how these colours and shapes make the garment so unique.
I think that cultural traditional patterns and techniques are such a huge part of fashion and they have massively influenced some of our greatest fashion designers today. John Galliano is a great example of this. His designs for the Dior show in 1998 were all hugely influenced by native American traditional clothing, pattern and colours.

week
Empathy
For this weeks blog, i decided to look at emotion through the title empathy. i created this portrait which is a Lucian Frued artist copy to emphasize on how you can convey emotion through colour.
i used a range of different tones of green and blues for this piece to evoke the mans feeling of abundance and to portray sad emotions.
blue is a colour usally associated with sad emotions. We understand this especially through the saying -“feeling blue”.

reflection:
I have really enjoyed this intro to project. Throughout the project, there was definitely some challenges that i faced. for example, when given some titles in the project i would sometimes find it a bit hard to know how to respond.
The sustainability part of the project was definitely the most interesting for me. i personally think, especially when thinking about fashion that sustainability is a very important thing that we all must be aware of. i learnt a lot about the negative effects creating many of the fabrics we wear has on our planet and how there has now been alternative more eco friendly ways to create these fabrics, which is better for the planet.
Even though, as said before, i did find it quite challenging to know how to respond to many of the titles, i think it also allowed me to become more creative and less precious about my responses. for example, the emerging technologies title allowed me to become more confident with using photoshop, and transforming my drawings through technology.
In my opinion, i think that i responses to the sustainability part of the project was the most successful one for me. i love creating the bin bag dress and also found it very enjoyable doing the photoshoot.
I really enjoyed how you used different mediums and techniques to be experimental with each week, through your blog i can see that you understood the concept for each week and you expressed your knowledge really well with your research and outcomes.
For week 1 i really enjoyed the way you translated your research through your outcomes, the manipulation with plastic bags to create a garment is very impressing, i really enjoyed the way you were able to create 3D shapes with the plastic bags as the material is very flimsy and don’t hold very well.
I think it was very interesting and unique the way you incorporated plastic into your work as people tend to use plastic bags to throw trash away.
For week 2 i really like how you used technology to play around and experiment with colour on your sample. It was really nice that even though your drawing were simple it was translated into different prints and designs.
I think next time you could try to print it out and put it on a person to see how it would look like or even create repeating design to create a potential fabric!
For week 3 i really enjoyed the layering of different mixed media, they way you have simple drawings ontop of detailed drawings are a really nice contrast ontop of each other.
For week 4 i really liked your colour palette, for you drawing the way you had combined simple geometric shapes together with non geometric shapes were very harmonious. you can clearly see where colours and the shapes were inspired from. The choices of colour was also really nice, they are bright and bold and they work together really well.
